Where it came from
Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro originated as a manga series written by Iipyao and illustrated by Yujiro Koyama, serialized in Shonen Jump+ from 2014 to 2017. The story follows Agetaro Katsumata, a young man working at his family's tonkatsu restaurant in Shibuya who finds his true calling in the world of DJing. The narrative humorously draws parallels between the rhythmic, repetitive nature of frying pork cutlets and the beat-matching precision required of a club disc jockey.
The 2016 television anime adaptation was produced by Studio DEEN and directed by Akitaro Daichi. The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, which maintains the exaggerated, raw aesthetic of Koyama's original manga illustrations. By blending the mundane life of a traditional cook with the vibrant nightlife of Tokyo's club scene, the show was received as a quirky, experimental comedy that found a cult following for its unique premise and eclectic soundtrack.
