Where it came from
The Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster Science Lesson Returns special was released in 2012 as a bonus feature for the Blu-ray Box release of the original Gunbuster series. It serves as a spiritual successor to the original Science Lessons included with the initial 1989 laserdisc and VHS releases. These segments were crafted to bridge the gap between hard science fiction concepts and the show’s high-octane narrative, utilizing the characters Noriko Takaya and Coach Ohta to explain complex physics through a humorous, educational lens.
The animation was produced by Studio Gainax, the legendary house behind the original series, and was intended to honor the legacy of Hideaki Anno's directorial debut. The design philosophy behind these returns was to maintain the authentic retro aesthetic of the late 80s while incorporating modern high-definition production techniques. Critics and fans largely viewed the special as a nostalgic tribute that successfully captured the self-aware, pedagogical charm of the original shorts while rewarding long-time enthusiasts of the franchise.
