Where it came from
Towanoquon, a series of six theatrical anime films produced by studio Bones, was released throughout 2011. The project was conceived as a high-production-value showcase for the studio's animation capabilities, focusing on a narrative about gifted teenagers known as Attractors who are hunted by a secret government organization. The films were directed by Umanosuke Iida, who sought to blend intense kinetic action sequences with a somber, philosophical exploration of human identity and moral responsibility.
The character design for the series was spearheaded by Toshihiro Kawamoto, a veteran collaborator of studio Bones known for his work on Cowboy Bebop. His designs aimed to balance the gritty, tactical aesthetic of the antagonists with the ethereal, fluid look of the powered protagonists. Upon release, the series was well-regarded for its technical fluidity and the distinct atmosphere of its urban science-fiction setting, though it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive filmography.
