Ttoli Janggun

Ttoli Janggun, or General Ttoli, was released in 1978 as a South Korean animated feature film directed by Im Jung-soo. Produced by Segi Corporation, the film was designed to serve as a piece of state-sponsored propaganda during the era of the Yushin regime. Its narrative focused on intense anti-communist sentiment, portraying North Korean figures as anthropomorphic animals to clearly demarcate the ideological divide for a younger audience.

The character design and overall aesthetic were heavily influenced by the visual language of contemporary animation, though the content was distinctly focused on nationalistic education. At the time of its release, the film was widely screened in schools across South Korea as part of government-mandated ideological training. While it was successful in achieving its primary goal of state-endorsed outreach, its reception today is primarily studied within the context of Cold War cultural history and the evolution of Korean animation.
