Umi

Umi is a foundational piece in the Japanese digital pet landscape, released by Bandai in the mid-1990s as part of the broader Tamagotchi evolution. Following the meteoric success of the original Tamagotchi, Bandai sought to expand the franchise by introducing specialized editions that moved beyond the standard creature-rearing model. The Umi, or 'Ocean' Tamagotchi, was designed to simulate the care of aquatic life, incorporating more complex challenges and a specific environment that mirrored the unpredictability of marine ecosystems.

The device is characterized by its distinct translucent blue shell and unique software programming, which required players to maintain water quality and manage different biological variables than the original terrestrial models. Developed under the creative oversight of Aki Maita and Akihiro Yokoi, the design aimed to capture the burgeoning late-90s interest in environmentalism and aquatic biology. While it remains a cult classic among digital pet enthusiasts, it was initially received as a niche expansion that bridged the gap between toy and simulated pet, eventually paving the way for more sophisticated electronic handheld games.
