Seventeen years ago, Takafumi's uncle fell into a coma, but now he's back like a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and, while comatose, he was actually transported to another world as some heroic guardian! Now, not only does Takafumi have to room with an uncle who is literally magical, he also has to catch the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes…and the traumatic outcome of the '90s console war!

Where it came from
Uncle from Another World, or Isekai Ojisan, originated as a manga series by Hotondoshindeiru, serialized online before being adapted into this 2022 television series produced by Studio Atelier Pontdarc. The narrative subverts the popular isekai genre by focusing on a man returning to modern-day Japan after spending seventeen years in a fantasy realm, leaving him with both powerful magical abilities and a deep disconnect from contemporary society. The project was notably subject to significant production delays, which were integrated into the show's meta-commentary, adding a layer of self-aware humor to its release cycle.
The series design balances high-fantasy tropes with the grounded, weary aesthetic of a protagonist struggling to reintegrate into reality. Visually, the production emphasizes the stark contrast between the vibrant, high-stakes magical world depicted in the Uncle's memories and his quiet, mundane life in a cramped Tokyo apartment. Critics and audiences largely received the work as a refreshing, satirical take on the isekai trope, particularly praising its character-driven humor and its willingness to poke fun at the cultural shifts that occurred while the protagonist was away.
