An anime adaptation of Sensha Yoshida's Utsurun Desu. four-panel "nonsensical" gag comedy manga. The manga used a stable of off-the-wall characters to tell jokes that defied logic or reasoning. The original manga ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine from 1989 to 1994.

Where it came from
Utsurun Desu. was released in 2009 by Studio Filmko as a direct-to-video adaptation of Sensha Yoshida's seminal 1989 surrealist gag manga. The original work is a pillar of the heta-uma movement—a subgenre of manga characterized by intentionally amateurish or 'bad-good' aesthetics—which challenged mainstream artistic standards in Japan during the late eighties. The 2009 production aimed to capture the rapid-fire, nonsensical spirit of the source material through a short-form animated format that remained faithful to the minimalist and unsettling visual style established by Yoshida.
The adaptation was helmed by director and screenwriter Akitaro Daichi, a veteran known for his ability to translate eccentric humor into animation. Daichi's direction focused on maintaining the frenetic pacing and dark, absurdist humor that made the manga a cult phenomenon. Upon release, the OVA was received as a respectful and nostalgic nod to the original series, praised for its commitment to the signature deadpan delivery and the bizarre character designs that defined the franchise’s legacy in alternative Japanese comedy.
