Where it came from
VOY@GER was released in 2021 as a short film project commissioned to celebrate the conclusion of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy. Produced by Studio Khara, the piece serves as a symbolic bridge between the legacy of the Evangelion franchise and the studio's broader creative ambitions, functioning as a music video set to the song 'Voyager' by Hikaru Utada. It features iconic visual motifs from the series repurposed into an ethereal, cinematic exploration of travel and departure.
The film was directed by Hideaki Anno's frequent collaborator and key animator, with a design language that leans heavily into the clean, minimalist aesthetic characteristic of modern Studio Khara productions. By stripping away the heavy narrative stakes of the main series, the project focuses on visual mood and the technical prowess of the studio’s animation team. It was received by fans as a meditative epilogue, praised for its fluid animation style and its departure from the complex character dramas that defined the original television run.
