Where it came from
Wagahai wa Inu de Aru: Don Matsugoro no Seikatsu, known in English as I Am a Dog: The Life of Don Matsugoro, was produced by Toei Animation and released in 1983. The special is based on the popular manga series by Rumiko Takahashi, who explored the humorous perspective of a dog named Don Matsugoro navigating the complexities of human society. The work emerged during a period where Takahashi's unique blend of lighthearted comedy and character-driven storytelling was gaining significant traction in Japanese media.
The animation design focuses on capturing the expressive and quirky aesthetic characteristic of Takahashi's 1980s output. Toei Animation utilized its standard production techniques of the era to translate the manga's panel-based gags into a cohesive short-form narrative. While it did not reach the widespread international recognition of some of the studio's longer-running series, the production is regarded by enthusiasts as a charming artifact of the early 1980s anime landscape, reflecting the studio's efforts to capitalize on the success of established manga properties.
