Where it came from
Wo Wei Ge Kuang, known as My Song My Music, is a landmark animated series produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the early 2000s. It was designed to capture the realities of life for Chinese teenagers, shifting away from traditional folklore and towards contemporary urban themes. The series focuses on the daily experiences of high school students in Shanghai, blending themes of academic pressure, family dynamics, and the burgeoning interest in popular music.
The character design and visual direction aimed for a realistic, grounded aesthetic that resonated with a younger demographic at a time when Chinese domestic animation was searching for a modern identity. By depicting the nuances of campus culture and the anxieties of adolescence, the show garnered significant critical attention and eventually achieved cult status among viewers who felt it provided a relatable reflection of their own lives.
