Where it came from
Wu Shan Wu Xing, also known as Fog Hill of the Five Elements, is a Chinese original net animation (ONA) produced by Nice Boat Animation and Samsara Studio. Premiering in 2020, the series emerged from a movement in Chinese animation aimed at reclaiming traditional artistic aesthetics, moving away from Western or Japanese stylistic influences to embrace the visual language of classical Chinese ink wash painting and traditional landscape art.
The series was directed and primarily envisioned by Lin Hun, whose approach to choreography and pacing emphasized fluid, high-octane martial arts sequences paired with a distinct, muted color palette reminiscent of traditional scroll paintings. Upon its release, the project garnered significant critical acclaim for its technical ambition, particularly the rigorous hand-drawn animation style, which marked a notable departure from the growing industry reliance on 3D computer-generated imagery.
