Xijing Sushe

Xijing Sushe, produced by Yofox Culture, emerged as a notable example of the burgeoning Chinese original net animation (ONA) industry. Created to explore themes of traditional aesthetics blended with modern narrative sensibilities, the project was developed to showcase the technical growth of domestic studios in the mid-2010s. The work serves as a stylistic experiment, focusing on atmospheric storytelling and distinct visual character designs that move away from conventional tropes.

The design philosophy behind the series emphasizes a curated, artisanal approach to animation, prioritizing fluid motion and a specific color palette intended to evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia. While it was received primarily within niche animation circles, it gained recognition for its artistic direction and the studio's commitment to independent production values. It remains a representative piece of the experimental wave of digital animation that sought to bridge the gap between fine art and mainstream internet streaming.
