Mari's three puppies were just born, when the earthquake in Yamakoshimura started. Now their home is in ruins, and their owner, an old man is trapped under the debris. Mari somehow manages to break her chain, and encourages the old man, until help arrives. In the end, someone saves the old man, but he can't take in the dogs, so they remain in the now abandoned village. Can Mari and the puppies live on like this?

Where it came from
Yamakoshi Mura no Mari to Sanbiki no Koinu was released in 2006 as a direct-to-video animation based on the true story of the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake in Japan. The film depicts the survival of a Shiba Inu named Mari and her three puppies after their village, Yamakoshi, was devastated by the tremors. It was produced in the aftermath of the disaster to serve as a symbol of resilience and recovery for the local community, which had been forced to evacuate.
The production sought to convey the deep bond between the dogs and the elderly residents who remained behind during the rescue efforts. By blending emotional storytelling with a realistic portrayal of the earthquake's impact, the film functioned as both a tribute to the victims and a source of comfort for survivors. It received widespread attention within Japan as a poignant reflection on animal loyalty and human perseverance during the difficult rebuilding phase of the region.
