Yanshi Chuanshuo

Yanshi Chuanshuo, titled Legend of Sealed Gods in English, emerged during a significant period of growth for Chinese original net animation (ONA). Produced by Youku and released as a 3D animated series, it represents a strategic effort by the streaming platform to leverage domestic folklore and high-fantasy themes to capture a younger, digital-native demographic. The project was conceived within the context of China's expanding animation industry, which sought to blend traditional mythology with the technical capabilities of modern CGI production.

The design of the series leans heavily into the wuxia and xianxia aesthetics popular in contemporary Chinese media. The animation team focused on character modeling and environmental world-building intended to compete with international standards for web-distributed content. While it received varying feedback regarding its pacing and narrative adaptation of classic source material, it remains a notable example of Youku’s commitment to building a proprietary library of animated fantasy dramas for its subscription service.
