Yodaka no Hoshi

Yodaka no Hoshi, or The Nighthawk Star, is a celebrated short story written by Kenji Miyazawa, first published in 1921. Miyazawa, a Japanese author and poet who spent much of his life in the rural Iwate Prefecture, crafted this fable during a period of burgeoning interest in children's literature that centered on nature, spirituality, and social conscience. The story centers on a misunderstood nighthawk who, feeling ostracized by the other birds, seeks meaning in the heavens, ultimately undergoing a profound transformation into a celestial body.

The narrative is widely recognized for its poignant exploration of self-sacrifice and existential loneliness. Throughout the decades, it has become a staple of Japanese literary education, frequently illustrated by various artists who seek to capture the melancholic, ethereal tone of Miyazawa's prose. Its design and visual presentation across diverse editions—ranging from classic woodblock-inspired prints to modern minimalist interpretations—reflect its status as an enduring masterpiece of Japanese folklore and transcendental literature.
