Yuan Yuan He Ji Qi Ren

Yuan Yuan He Ji Qi Ren, released in 1988 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, emerged during a period of transition for Chinese animation. The film reflects the studio's mid-1980s shift toward incorporating science fiction elements into traditional narrative structures, aiming to engage a younger audience increasingly curious about technology and the future. It serves as a representative example of the studio's experimental efforts to modernize its aesthetic while maintaining the moral storytelling traditions that defined its earlier, classic works.

The film's visual identity is characterized by the studio's signature hand-drawn style, which sought to balance functional mechanical designs with expressive, humanized character animation. Directed and crafted by a team of artists working within the state-supported studio system, the piece was designed to foster an imaginative outlook on the relationship between humanity and robotics. It received modest local attention upon release as part of the studio's effort to diversify its catalog and introduce futuristic themes to domestic viewers.
