Where it came from
Yuke! Shouei-kun was released in 2012 as an original net animation designed to promote the city of Shouei, located in the Tottori Prefecture of Japan. The short was commissioned by the local municipal government as part of a grassroots campaign to boost tourism and regional interest by creating a mascot-led narrative that showcased local landmarks and cultural appeal.
The animation features Shouei-kun, a mascot character created to embody the spirit of the town. The visual design leans into the bright, simplified aesthetic characteristic of Japanese municipal mascot marketing, intended to be accessible to a wide audience, including children and local families. It was received as a niche effort in the regional branding space, highlighting the growing trend of small Japanese municipalities utilizing digital media to gain national visibility.
