Yuki no Joou

Released in 1975, Yuki no Joou (The Snow Queen) is a feature-length animated film produced by the Japanese educational publishing and production company Gakken. The project was conceived as part of a trend in Japanese animation during the mid-1970s that sought to adapt classic Western fairy tales into refined, artistic cinematic features. By leveraging their established reputation in educational materials, Gakken aimed to produce a faithful, high-quality retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 story for a younger audience.

The film’s design reflects the soft, illustrative aesthetic common to 1970s Japanese children’s media, prioritizing warmth and narrative clarity over the avant-garde experiments occurring in other corners of the anime industry at the time. Directed by Osamu Dezaki—though often credited to the Gakken production collective—the animation features the gentle character designs and evocative backgrounds that were hallmarks of the era's family-oriented features. While it did not achieve the international renown of later studio masterpieces, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its nostalgic visual style and its place within a significant period of literary adaptation in Japanese animation history.
