Where it came from
Yume Hakonda Randoseru, which translates to The Schoolbag That Carried Dreams, is a poignant short film produced by NHK. It was created as a narrative piece centered on the iconic Japanese randoseru—the traditional, rigid leather backpack used by elementary school students—to evoke themes of childhood transition, academic duty, and the sentimental value placed on such a quintessential childhood object within Japanese culture.
The production reflects NHK's long-standing dedication to high-quality, illustrative storytelling aimed at both youth and family audiences. The design and artistic direction were handled by internal studio teams who focused on a warm, nostalgic aesthetic. Upon release, the film was well-regarded for its gentle pacing and its ability to capture the profound emotional resonance of everyday school life, cementing its status as a gentle touchstone in NHK's extensive catalog of short-form educational and sentimental media.
