Where it came from
Yuusha Exkaiser, produced by Sunrise and directed by Katsuyoshi Yatabe, premiered in 1990 as the inaugural entry in the Brave series. The project was conceived as a partnership between Sunrise and toy manufacturer Takara, intended to revitalize the transforming robot genre by blending traditional super robot tropes with the Sentai-style focus on team dynamics and sentient mechanical lifeforms. It set the visual and thematic template for the entire franchise, emphasizing deep bonds between human children and their robot guardians.
The design of the Exkaiser mecha was heavily influenced by the aesthetic language of the time, focusing on complex, multi-part transformations that mirrored the physical engineering of the concurrent toy line. Masterminded by the creative team at Sunrise, the series was well-received for its optimistic tone and high production values, successfully establishing a recurring formula that would define the Brave series for the following decade. Its legacy remains as the cornerstone of nineties mecha anime aimed at younger audiences.
