Where it came from
Zero Sum Game was released by Blue Eyes in 2001 as an original video animation (OVA), emerging during a period when independent animation studios were increasingly exploring darker, psychological themes within the science fiction genre. The production was intended to showcase the studio's technical capabilities in combining hand-drawn animation with early digital compositing techniques, aiming to create a stark, high-contrast aesthetic that mirrored the narrative's themes of moral ambiguity and systemic collapse.
The character design and visual direction were heavily influenced by late-nineties cyberpunk sensibilities, characterized by muted color palettes and deliberate, pacing-heavy layouts. Upon its release, the title gained a modest but loyal following among aficionados of experimental animation. While it did not reach widespread commercial prominence, critics at the time frequently highlighted its unconventional storytelling structure and its commitment to a gritty, atmospheric visual style that prioritized mood over traditional action-oriented animation tropes.
