Zillion

Zillion debuted in 1987 as a science fiction anime series produced by Tatsunoko Production. The project was primarily conceived as a multimedia marketing initiative for Sega, designed to promote their burgeoning line of Zillion-branded light gun toys. Set on the colonized planet Maris, the narrative follows a trio of operatives wielding specialized beam weapons in a conflict against an invading alien force, effectively blending tactical space combat with the high-energy aesthetic common to late eighties Japanese animation.

The character designs were handled by Akemi Takada, a renowned artist whose work on shows like Kimagure Orange Road defined the visual style of the era. Takada’s contributions gave the series a distinctive, polished look that balanced the utilitarian requirements of a tie-in product with a compelling, character-driven artistic sensibility. While initially created to support toy sales, the show gained a dedicated cult following for its solid production values and well-developed action sequences, remaining a notable example of synergy between toy manufacturers and animation studios during the decade.
