African Shrike-flycatcher

The African Shrike-flycatcher, Megabyas flammulatus, belongs to the family Vangidae and is a distinctive inhabitant of the canopy layers in central and western African rainforests. It was scientifically described in 1852 by the French naturalist Jules Verreaux, reflecting the mid-19th century surge in European ornithological exploration of the African continent. The species is characterized by its dramatic sexual dimorphism, with males sporting a striking white underbelly contrasting against a slate-gray head and back, while females exhibit more rufous and barred coloration.

The bird's design—specifically its pointed wings and notched tail—is an evolutionary response to its niche as a specialized flycatcher. These physical attributes allow for swift, agile flight maneuvers when intercepting insects in the mid-story and canopy foliage.
