Albert's Lyrebird

Albert's Lyrebird was formally described by John Gould in 1850, named in honor of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The species is endemic to a small, specific range in the subtropical rainforests along the border of New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. Unlike its more widely distributed relative, the Superb Lyrebird, this species was historically difficult to document due to the rugged, inaccessible nature of its high-altitude habitat.

The bird is characterized by its distinctive morphology, including rounded wings and a unique, fanned tail structure that lacks the elaborate lyre-shaped feathers of its cousin. Gould, an prolific illustrator and ornithologist, sought to capture the avian diversity of Australia for his ambitious publication 'The Birds of Australia'. The species remains a subject of intense interest for ornithologists due to its complex vocal mimicry and the restricted geographical distribution that makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation.
