Andaman Scops-Owl

The Andaman Scops-owl (Otus balli) is an endemic species restricted to the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. First described in 1873 by ornithologist George Marshall, the species was named in honor of Valentine Ball, a geologist and naturalist who conducted extensive surveys in the region during the nineteenth century. Its evolutionary lineage reflects the unique isolation of the Andaman archipelago, where distinct ecological niches have allowed several endemic owl species to flourish in relative seclusion.

The physical characteristics of the species, notably its rounded wings and short tail, are evolutionary adaptations suited to the dense tropical forests of the islands. As an elusive, nocturnal predator, the bird is primarily recognized by its vocalizations rather than visual sightings, making it a subject of fascination for ornithologists studying island biogeography.
