Baird's Sparrow

Baird's Sparrow was formally described by John James Audubon in 1843, named in honor of his young friend and colleague, Spencer Fullerton Baird, who would go on to become the second Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Audubon encountered the specimen during his expedition to the upper Missouri River, documenting a species that occupies the short-to-mixed-grass prairies of the Great Plains, an ecosystem that has become increasingly fragmented since the 19th century.

The species is characterized by its cryptic plumage, which serves as an essential adaptation for survival within dense grasslands. Ornithologists often note its distinct, rounded wing shape and notched tail, features that contribute to a specific flight pattern often observed during its elusive breeding season.
