Barred Parakeet

The Barred Parakeet, scientifically classified as Bolborhynchus lineola, is native to the humid mountain forests of Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to Peru. Unlike many other psittacines that have a long history of domestication, these birds were only introduced to the global aviculture trade in the mid-20th century. Their presence in collections is primarily driven by their distinctive, calm temperament and their unique, somewhat cryptic plumage, which serves as natural camouflage in the dense canopy of their native cloud forests.

The species is easily distinguished by its rounded wings and characteristic pointed tail, features that contribute to its graceful, often ground-dwelling flight patterns in the wild. Breeders and ornithologists have long admired the bird's subtle coloration, consisting of green feathers intricately marked with black bars, which gives the species its common name. In captivity, the bird has been selectively bred for a variety of color mutations, yet it remains a niche species that requires specialized knowledge of its temperate climate needs and its tendency to be less vocal than other popular pet parrots.
