Beck's Petrel

Beck's Petrel was first described by Robert Cushman Murphy in 1928, based on specimens collected by Rollo Beck during the Whitney South Sea Expedition in 1928. For many decades following its discovery, the species remained an enigma, as no further sightings were confirmed for nearly 80 years, leading some researchers to fear it might be extinct. Its rediscovery in 2007 near the Bismarck Archipelago provided the scientific community with its first opportunity to study the bird in its natural habitat and confirm its status as a distinct, albeit critically endangered, member of the Procellariidae family.

The bird is characterized by a long, slender wing shape designed for efficient soaring over vast stretches of ocean and a distinctly pointed tail, which aids in its agile flight patterns. The design of the species, shaped by millions of years of evolutionary adaptation to the pelagic environment, reflects the specialized requirements of a high-seas hunter. It is currently categorized by the IUCN as critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss and predation by invasive species in its remote nesting grounds.
