Bertram's Weaver

Bertram's Weaver, scientifically known as Ploceus bertrandi, was first described by the zoologist George Ernest Shelley in 1893. Named in honor of Bertram Lutley Sclater, who collected the type specimen, the species is native to the woodlands and edges of forests in regions including Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Unlike many of its colonial-nesting relatives, this weaver is typically observed in pairs or small groups, foraging through canopy foliage with a distinct, deliberate movement supported by its broad wing shape.

The bird’s design reflects an evolutionary specialization for maneuvering through dense, wooded environments rather than the open grasslands favored by other weavers. Its rounded tail and robust wing structure facilitate precise, short-range flights within the understory. In the ornithological community, the species is often noted for its lack of the extreme social nesting behaviors found in other members of the Ploceidae family, making it a subject of interest for those studying the diversification of weaving behaviors across the genus.
