Biak Scops-Owl

The Biak Scops-owl, scientifically classified as Otus beccarii, is an endemic species restricted to the Biak-Supiori islands in the Indonesian province of Papua. It was historically considered a subspecies of the more widespread Moluccan scops-owl, but taxonomic reclassification has identified it as a distinct species due to significant variations in its vocalizations and morphology. Its evolution in a geographically isolated environment has resulted in its unique physical characteristics, including its signature rounded wing and tail shapes which are well-adapted for maneuvering through the dense forest canopy of its limited range.
