Black-and-yellow Broadbill

The black-and-yellow broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus) was formally described by the French naturalist Stamford Raffles in 1822. Native to the lowland forests of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra, this species is representative of the Eurylaimidae family, which evolved to occupy dense, humid forest canopies. The bird's distinctive plumage—marked by a vivid yellow throat, a black breast band, and intricate yellow scalloping on its wings—serves as a classic example of disruptive coloration within the dense, dappled light of the rainforest.

The physical characteristics of the species, such as its rounded wing and tail shape, are highly specialized adaptations for maneuverability within the cluttered understory and mid-strata of tropical forests.
