Black-backed Bush Tanager

The Black-backed Bush Tanager was formally described by the ornithologist Hans von Berlepsch and Jan Sztolcman in 1894. It is endemic to the humid montane forests of the northern Andes, primarily inhabiting the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador. Its classification within the tanager family, Thraupidae, reflects a complex history of taxonomic revision, as it is the sole member of the genus Urothraupis, a distinction that highlights its unique evolutionary trajectory in high-altitude environments.

The bird’s physical characteristics, particularly its rounded wings and rounded tail, are adaptations suited to its sedentary, skulking nature within the dense, tangled undergrowth of the Andean canopy. Designed by nature for maneuverability rather than long-distance migration, the species remains elusive and largely tied to its specific ecological niche. Its discovery came during a period of intense European biological exploration in South America, where naturalists sought to catalog the rich avian diversity of the neotropics to better understand the continent's biogeography.
