Black-breasted Barbet

The Black-breasted Barbet (Pogonornis rolleti) was first formally described by the French naturalist Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet des Murs in 1861. It is a distinctive member of the Lybiidae family, indigenous to the savanna regions of north-eastern Africa, particularly across South Sudan, Ethiopia, and parts of Uganda. Its naming honors the explorer and collector Captain Rollet, who contributed significant ornithological specimens from the White Nile region to European scientific collections during the mid-19th century.

The bird's design is defined by its striking, high-contrast plumage and a stout, ivory-colored bill adapted for a frugivorous diet. Its rounded wings and short tail are classic morphological features of the barbet family, reflecting an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through dense acacia scrub rather than sustained long-distance flight.
