Black Bushbird

The Black Bushbird, Neoctantes niger, is a species of insectivorous bird within the family Thamnophilidae, native to the humid lowland forests of the western Amazon Basin. First described by the German ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1847, this elusive species is historically significant for its specialized adaptation to dense understory habitats. Unlike many of its more vibrant counterparts in the antbird family, the Black Bushbird reflects a distinct evolutionary divergence characterized by its uniform plumage and unique, slightly upturned bill, which it uses to forage among leaf litter and tangled vines.

The design of the Black Bushbird is defined by its subtle, functional morphology, featuring rounded wings that facilitate short, agile flights through thick vegetation and a noticeably notched tail.
