Black-crowned Waxbill

The Black-crowned Waxbill, or Estrilda nonnula, is a small estrildid finch native to the tropical regions of Central Africa. It was formally described by the German ornithologist Gustav Hartlaub in 1883. Like many members of the genus Estrilda, it is prized by enthusiasts for its subtle, intricate plumage and gentle demeanor, having been documented in ornithological records as part of the broader study of African granivorous birds during the late 19th-century colonial exploration period.

The bird is characterized by a distinctive combination of a black crown, a white belly, and greyish-brown wings. Its physiological design features rounded wings and a notched tail, which facilitate its agile, fluttering flight through dense shrubbery and tall grasses.
