Black-vented Shearwater

The Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas) is a seabird endemic to the islands off the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico. First described by ornithologist Elliott Coues in 1864, the species was historically recognized for its specialized life cycle tied to the temperate waters of the California Current. Its evolution has favored a wing shape optimized for dynamic soaring, allowing the bird to traverse vast distances across the ocean surface with minimal energy expenditure, a characteristic trait of the shearwater family.

The physical design of the species, marked by its slender, pointed tail and dark plumage, is a functional adaptation for high-speed foraging and agility in marine environments. While not a human-designed object, the bird represents a distinct branch of procellariiform evolution that has been observed and studied by naturalists since the mid-19th century.
