Black-winged Lovebird

The Black-winged Lovebird, Agapornis taranta, is a species of parrot endemic to the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Unlike many of its cousins in the genus Agapornis that inhabit tropical lowlands, this species adapted to high-altitude temperate forests. Its classification by the scientific community dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was formally described by the ornithologist Edward Stanley, the 13th Earl of Derby, in 1814. The species is distinguished by its sexually dimorphic plumage, with males displaying a characteristic red forehead and eye-ring that sets them apart from the females and other lovebird species.

The design of this bird, shaped by evolution for life in rugged, montane terrain, features a robust build with broad wings and a rounded tail, allowing for efficient navigation through the dense canopies of juniper and podocarpus forests. Within aviculture, the species is noted for being one of the largest and most hardy of the lovebirds. While they were historically less common in the international pet trade compared to the peach-faced or masked lovebirds, they have been studied and kept by conservationists and dedicated hobbyists who appreciate their unique vocalizations and relatively calm temperament.
