Blue-spotted Wood-Dove

The blue-spotted wood-dove, Turtur afer, is a member of the Columbidae family native to the Afrotropic ecozone, primarily found in sub-Saharan Africa. It was first formally described by the ornithologist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, in the 18th century as part of the broader effort to classify the diverse avian life of the continent. Evolutionarily, its distinctive rounded wings and square tail have adapted it for life in thickets, forest edges, and cultivated gardens, allowing for quick, agile flight over short distances.

The bird is characterized by its iridescent blue-green spots on its wing coverts, which serve as its primary identifier in the field.
