Bronze-winged Jacana

The Bronze-winged Jacana, scientifically known as Metopidius indicus, is a unique shorebird native to the wetlands of South and Southeast Asia. Its evolutionary lineage is characterized by long, slender toes and elongated claws that allow it to forage for insects and mollusks while walking gracefully across floating vegetation, an adaptation that earned it the colloquial nickname lily-trotter. The species was formally described by the English ornithologist John Latham in 1790, a period during which European naturalists were intensely cataloging the diverse avian life of the Indian subcontinent.

The aesthetic appeal of the species is defined by its striking, deep-bronze wing coverts and a distinct white supercilium that curves behind the eye.
