Brown-backed Needletail

The Brown-backed Needletail, Hirundapus giganteus, is a species of swift native to the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. Classified within the Apodidae family, its evolutionary history is defined by extreme aerial specialization. The bird is characterized by its distinctively pointed wings and a slightly forked, spinous-tipped tail, evolutionary adaptations that facilitate rapid, sustained flight and complex aerial maneuvering while hunting insects on the wing.

First described by ornithologists in the nineteenth century, the species has long been a subject of study for its exceptional flight mechanics. Unlike many other avian species, the Brown-backed Needletail spends the vast majority of its life in the air, rarely perching.
