Brown-backed Woodpecker

The Brown-backed Woodpecker (Dendropicos obsoletus) is a species native to the savanna regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Ornithologically categorized within the Picidae family, the species was first formally described by naturalists during the expansion of European biological survey efforts in Africa throughout the nineteenth century. Its design is evolutionary, characterized by a broad wing structure that facilitates short, undulating flight patterns typical of woodland-dwelling woodpeckers, and a stiff, pointed tail used as a prop for stability while foraging on tree trunks.
