Brown Eared-Pheasant

The Brown Eared-Pheasant, native to the high-altitude mountain forests of northern China, has long held a significant place in Chinese culture. Historically, its long, stiff white tail feathers were highly prized as symbols of martial courage and authority, traditionally worn by warriors and actors portraying heroic figures in Chinese opera. These birds occupy a very specific, limited ecological niche, which has historically made them a subject of fascination for naturalists documenting the unique biodiversity of the Shanxi province.

Scientific documentation of the species began in the 19th century, with its rounded wing and tail morphology serving as key identifiers within the Crossoptilon genus.
