Brown Shrike

The Brown Shrike, Lanius cristatus, is a migratory passerine bird belonging to the shrike family, Laniidae. It is native to eastern Asia, breeding in regions such as Siberia and Mongolia before migrating south to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent for the winter. Within the context of ornithological classification, this species is noted for its distinctive 'mask'—a dark stripe extending across the eye—and its habit of impaling prey on thorns or barbed wire, a behavior characteristic of the shrike genus, which earned them the moniker 'butcherbirds'.
