Buckley's Forest-Falcon

Buckley's Forest-Falcon, or Micrastur buckleyi, was scientifically described by Swann in 1919 and named in honor of the British collector Clarence Buckley, who gathered specimens in the upper Amazon basin during the late 19th century. As a member of the forest-falcon genus, this species evolved to thrive in the dense, shaded understory of the western Amazonian rainforest, relying on stealth and short-burst aerial maneuvers rather than the long-distance soaring common to other raptors.

The bird's distinct morphology, characterized by its pointed wings and rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation for navigating the cluttered vertical environment of tropical forests. It was long considered a poorly known species until further ornithological surveys in the mid-20th century clarified its range and behavior, distinguishing it from other forest-falcons through its specific vocalizations and subtle plumage differences, such as the white nuchal collar found in the adult morph.
