Calliope Hummingbird

The Calliope Hummingbird, named after the Greek muse of eloquence, was first described by naturalist John Gould in 1847. As the smallest breeding bird in North America, its identity is rooted in its rugged migratory journey, traveling from its breeding grounds in the high mountains of the western United States and Canada to the volcanic highlands of Mexico. It evolved to thrive in cold, high-altitude coniferous forests, a unique ecological niche that distinguishes it from other hummingbird species that prefer more temperate or lowland tropical environments.

The bird is characterized by its iridescent, wine-red gorget feathers that expand to form a star-like pattern, a display trait utilized during courtship rituals.
