Campbell Islands Teal

The Campbell Island teal, Anas nesiotis, is a flightless, nocturnal duck endemic to the Campbell Island group of New Zealand. Once thought to be extinct following the introduction of invasive Norway rats in the early 19th century, the species was rediscovered in 1975 when a small, remnant population was found on the predator-free Dent Island. Its distinct evolutionary path, characterized by broad wings and a rounded tail, reflects an adaptation to a life on the ground in a wind-swept, isolated subantarctic environment.

The survival of this species is a landmark achievement in conservation biology. Following the rediscovery, a captive breeding program was established at the Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre to ensure the species' future. By 2004, after the successful eradication of rats from the main Campbell Island, a reintroduction program began. The design of their physical form, specifically their reduced flight capabilities and specialized plumage, remains a subject of study for ornithologists seeking to understand the unique pressures of island biogeography.
