Canivet's Emerald

The Canivet’s emerald, or Cynanthus canivetii, is a striking hummingbird species native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Central America and Mexico. Named in honor of the French naturalist and bird collector Étienne Canivet, the species was first formally described by the French ornithologist René Lesson in 1832. Its classification emerged during a period of intense European exploration and systematic cataloging of New World biodiversity, as naturalists sought to categorize the vast array of avian life found within the Neotropics.
