Caroline Islands Swiftlet

The Caroline Islands swiftlet, scientifically classified as Aerodramus inquietus, is an avian species endemic to the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It evolved within the isolated island ecosystems of this region, adapting specifically to the humid, forested environments of islands such as Pohnpei. Its taxonomic identity and physical characteristics, including its signature pointed wings and notched tail, were formalised by researchers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as ornithologists worked to catalogue the biodiversity of Micronesia.

The species is distinguished by its reliance on echolocation, a survival mechanism that allows it to navigate and nest in the deep, dark limestone caves of its native habitat. Biologists have long studied the swiftlet for its distinct evolutionary path, which reflects the broader biological history of the South Pacific.
