Cattle Tyrant

The Cattle Tyrant, Machetornis rixosa, is a distinctive member of the tyrant flycatcher family that occupies open habitats across much of South America. Unlike many of its relatives that hunt primarily from aerial perches, this species is noted for its terrestrial behavior, often foraging on the ground in pastures and near livestock. Its evolutionary adaptation to anthropogenic landscapes has allowed it to thrive alongside cattle ranching, as it frequently perches on the backs of grazing animals to hunt insects disturbed by their movement.

The species was formally described by French naturalist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1819. In terms of design, the bird exhibits a functional morphology suited to its unique lifestyle, featuring a broad wing shape for efficient short-distance flight and a rounded tail that aids in maneuverability while foraging on the ground. Its plumage, characterized by olive-brown upperparts and a yellowish underbelly, serves as effective camouflage within the savanna and grassland environments that define its ecological niche.
