Chestnut-throated Seedeater

The Chestnut-throated Seedeater (Sporophila telasco) is a small passerine bird native to the arid coastal regions of western South America, primarily distributed from Ecuador through Peru to northern Chile. Within the taxonomy of the Thraupidae family, this species belongs to a group of seedeaters uniquely adapted to the scrublands and agricultural edges of the Pacific slope. It was formally described in 1827 by the French naturalist René Lesson, who identified the species during the era of rapid 19th-century biological exploration in the Neotropics.

The bird is characterized by a rounded wing shape and a distinctly notched tail, anatomical features that facilitate its maneuverability within dense grasses and shrubbery. Its plumage—notably the rufous-chestnut throat from which it derives its common name—serves as a primary identifier for researchers. The species is generally observed in small, nomadic flocks that follow the seasonal availability of seeds, reflecting a specialized evolutionary response to the fluctuating climate of the Peruvian coastal desert.
